This led researchers to determine if the cancer peptide could eliminate the growth of cancer cells altogether.
Researchers also found that it created a blockade of tumor growth when the peptide was administered – two weeks during the administration and two weeks after.

This caused researchers to expand their knowledge from earlier studies that pnc27 could diminish solid tissue tumor cells by attaching to hdm-2 proteins.
The experiment’s goal was to determine whether non-solid tumor cells expressed hdm-2 in their membranes, as solid tissue cells could.
Interestingly, researchers found that these non-solid tumor cells expressed HDM2 in cell membranes and that the peptide could induce necrosis the same way HDM2 binding could in solid tissue cells.
In a 2009 clinical trial of pnc 27, researchers found that the peptide’s p53 residues were superimposable on the structure for the same residues connected to hdm2. Thus, scientists concluded that pnc 27 could reach hdm-2 cancer cell membranes.
Because cancer cells have high levels of HDM in their membranes, this enables PNC-27 to specifically target the cancerous cells, while leaving healthy tissues unharmed.
Scientists also later discovered that by implanting untransformed cells not susceptible to pnc27 with hdm2, they would become vulnerable to the peptide. This provided the researchers with the proof they needed that PNC-27 peptide could target HDM-2 in the membranes of cancer cells and eliminate them via membranolysis.
Meanwhile, another study in 2010 determined that PNC-27 destroyed cancer cells as a whole peptide, rather than as fragments. Scientists wanted to know whether the pores in the cancer cell membrane were created by fragments of the peptide or by the whole peptide. This study proved it was the latter.
In the experiment, researchers learned that the entire peptide caused the effects in cancerous cells’ cell membrane, while other noncancerous cells around them remained healthy.
Due to limited research, the safety and side effects of PNC-27 are largely unknown. However, some side effects have been noted in animal studies, such as dry skin, headache, high blood pressure, nose inflammation, rectal bleeding and back pain.
